As an insurance agency, we want to provide you with important information regarding title bonds (also known as lost title bonds or certificate of title surety bonds).
A title bond is a three-party financial guarantee that allows you to establish legal ownership of a vehicle or property when the original title is lost, stolen, or missing proper documentation. It protects the state and any rightful owners in the event of an ownership dispute.
- Financial Protection: The bond pays out the value of the vehicle if a past or true owner proves the property belongs to them.
- Bond Amount: The bond amount is usually set by the state at 1.5 to 2 times the total value of the vehicle.
- Time Limit: Most bonds remain active for a set period—frequently three years—after which you can typically apply for a clean, standard title if no claims are made.
- You bought a vehicle via a bill of sale but never received the official title from the seller.
- You inherited a car, boat, or trailer without official paperwork.
- The original title was destroyed, heavily damaged, or filled out with major errors.
